Blog Entry No. 4 Social media has become a powerful tool for connection, expression, and learning, but it also poses serious challenges for academic institutions. At AiBiCi State University, the rising concerns over misinformation, cyberbullying, and unauthorized sharing of private information prompted implementing a university-wide social media policy. Aimed at safeguarding free speech while promoting responsible online behavior, the policy introduced training programs, appointed a social media officer for enforcement, and established clear guidelines on crisis response, ethical conduct, and confidentiality. While the initiative effectively reduced policy violations and improved digital engagement, it sparked essential conversations about balancing individual freedoms and institutional oversight. Through open dialogue and ongoing policy reviews, the university responded to concerns raised by students and staff, refining its approach to support protection and expression. Question:...

BLOG ENTRY NO. 3: AiBiCi University (ABC), a state institution in the southern Philippines, collects and keeps track of administrative, faculty, and student data, including personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, addresses, student records, and financial data. An unknown hacker collective once took credit for breaking into the AiBiCi student database and posting private data on the dark web. The university's IT department found that a faculty member's account with administrator access had a weak password, which was the cause of the breach. Researchers discovered that the university lacked a strong Data Protection Officer (DPO) role and had antiquated cybersecurity procedures. Faculty and students worried about financial fraud and identity theft after the hack. AiBiCi was under investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) for violating RA 10173 regarding data protection procedures, breach disclosure, and responsibility.  The university administration m...

BLOG 2: Countermeasures to take as a DPO

Blog 2: Countermeasures to take as a DPO   Statement:           A state university in Mindanao digitized its student records to increase its productivity. The university's department has developed an online student portal so all students can view their enrollment information. Besides being able to view their enrollment information on the so-called online student portal, their grades and personal data are also included and shown on the online student portal. However, due to the inadequate security measures, most probably by the university body and the university's Protection Officer or DPO, a student from the university has unintentionally found fault in the access available to the public on the online student portal. The said student found that they could access the other students' information, including their personal information, grades, names, and even their contact details, in the public eye. This could be done by only altering a few...

BLOG 1: First Day in ITIS 326

Blog 1 : First Day in ITIS 326 The first day of this class was truly nerve-wracking, just like the first day of our previous class with the same professor assigned to this in the first semester of my third year of college. Although a little less nervous on the nerves now, as we have experienced a semester with the said professor and his way of teaching, what added fuel to the fire was the subject course itself. The course subject holds considerable weight and pressure as it is also one of our major subject. I was ready for what to expect and got prepared mentally and physically for the subject. I learned a lot from the last course this professor has handled for us, so I felt like a change should be done and made with my current study habits and priorities. I also came to understand how much I cherish the individuals in my life, my support network. My classmates and friends were available when I required assistance, whether it was for emotional support or impromptu study sessions. Colle...
